ANZAC Commemorations

This year, ANZAC Day, Monday 25 April, will fall just prior to the start of Term 2. Dylan Quick, Year 6 trumpet student, will be playing the bugle calls for the ANZAC Day Dawn Service at the Caulfield RSL. Dylan is to be commended for this achievement at such a young age and anyone who resides nearby is encouraged to attend the service.

On Wednesday 27 April, we start the term with rehearsals and performances, starting with the McArthur Strings rehearsal at 7.30am in the Music School. Later that day, there will be an ANZAC Service held in the hall which will be live streamed to all classrooms. This will include a live rendition of The Last Post and Rouse.

At 10.30am School Captain Isabella Dissegna, Dylan Quick and Year 8 violinist, Campbell Holtham, will walk to the local aged care facility Victoria by the Park where they will respectively read The Ode, play the bugle calls and perform music for reflection to the residents at 11.00am

The wreath which is laid during our school ANZAC service will sit at the base of our flagpole before being taken to a war epitaph in the community. This year, the wreath will be placed at the memorial in the Hopetoun Gardens near to our Elsternwick campus.

Founders Day Dinner

On Saturday 14 May, students form the Middle School Choir will travel from Elsternwick to the city to lead the singing at Wesley College’s Founders Day Dinner. School uniform is required, and we will sing The Best School of All, along with the guests in the Regent Theatre Ballroom. Parents are advised to put this date in the diary, as it is early in Term 2.

Autumn Music Soiree review from audience perspective

“On Monday, I attended my first Soiree for the year at Wesley College’s Elsternwick Campus. It was held in Fitchett Hall, which has beautiful acoustics. The concert started with one of the student Music Captains welcoming everyone to the first live concert for over a year. Each student introduced themselves and either sang or performed solos or duos on the piano, violin, cello or trumpet. These young students were confident and seemed to enjoy their performing experience. How different compared to when I was a child! It was a delight to see and hear these young musicians presenting and singing and playing and speaking and entertaining their audience with such confidence. I was so impressed that I forgot all about how busy I was. I have to say that it made my day! I wish every student who performed on that evening all the very best for their musical endeavours in the future. I congratulate all the teachers and the parents for supporting their students in such a positive manner”.  Author anonymous

Out and about

Student reflection from Year 8 Music Captain, Ananya Ramsubramanian: “On Monday, the Middle School Choir students from Years 7, 8 and 9, along with the Year 8 girls String Quartet, went to Victoria by the Park to entertain the residents. This was an incredibly enriching experience as it is one of the first in-person performances we’ve had in a while. As we were singing, the sense of warmth that our Wesley songs and hymns brought to the residents and seeing some of them sing along and enjoy the performance made it extremely rewarding. Performing for the residents at Victoria by the Park is something that we have done before and each time, it becomes more familiar and gratifying.  I hope that it becomes a tradition to be continued at Wesley Elsternwick for many years to come.”

Student Performances – Spotlight on Year 8

The Year 8 MYP Music course includes regular ensemble sessions where students present their music items to the other students at the end of term.

Tanya Davies was the Guest of Honour, so it seemed a fitting conclusion to the performance to sing our Elsternwick farewell song ‘Goodbye Old School’ to mark the end of her time at Wesley. Click here to see images from this performance session.
