It was a thrilling end to the 2024 APS Sport Cross Country season with the Wesley boys’ team clinching their 8th consecutive premiership in a tightly fought contest. Despite a challenging season filled with injuries, the Girls team finished strong, claiming 4th place.
Team Captain Matt, who has been part of the team since Year 8, called the victory an ‘amazing feat’ and is proud to be part of the powerful legacy created by this team. His Co-Captain Hamish, who joined the squad in Year 7, reflected on the significance of their success: ‘With every win, the stakes get higher, and there is more of an expectation to perform which adds to the excitement of racing. It’s special to be part of this incredible winning streak.’
Hamish, who hopes to pursue a career in running, emphasised the important role that teamwork and friendship played in their success. ‘Being good mates with everyone on the team is a real motivator. If egos get in the way, it affects performance, but when we’re united, it makes a tough sport more enjoyable,’ he explained.
‘The key to the win was our depth,’ said Head coach, Tim O’Shaughnessy. ‘We had 12 boys in the First team from Year 8 through to Senior School, all working hard and running consistently throughout the season.’ Tim also acknowledged the inspiration provided by former Wesley Cross Country Captains Adam Spencer (OW2019), who recently competed in the Paris Olympics, and Logan Janetzki (OW2022) and Ed Marks (OW2019), both current Victorian Cross Country Champions.
‘It’s special to think that runners who contributed to these premierships have gone on to represent Australia at world championships and the Olympics,’ said Matt. ‘The depth of Cross Country participation at Wesley is the envy of other schools, and we have the culture to lead to more success.’
Both captains praised Head Coach Tim O'Shaughnessy and the coaching staff for their organisation, accountability and personalised support. ‘Tim and the other coaches foster a great community, and having someone who has coached Australian athletes at the Olympics in Tokyo is a real privilege. Tim’s advice and guidance shows care and interest for each of his athletes, and we are all extremely grateful for that. I know Tim and the team will have their eyes on a 9th consecutive premiership next season.’
