Few other events get the heart racing the way that the Melbourne Grand Prix does. So, it was particularly exciting to hold the fifth Wesley College Foundation GP Breakfast on the first day of practice, to be track side, and to have a panel with a unique Wesley connection.

(L-R): Guest speakers Rosanna Tennant and David Brabham with MC, Pete Lazar (OW1995)

Our own Pete Lazar (OW1995) was MC for a discussion about family, careers and of course, motor sport. We were privileged to welcome one of the world’s elite sports car racers, David Brabham – an outright and triple Le Mans 24 Hours class winner, double American Le Mans Series Champion, and former Formula 1 driver.

We were also thrilled to welcome back Formula One presenter Rosanna Tennant as our second guest speaker. Host of the BBC’s radio program, Racing Torque, Rosanna leads F1's coverage on race weekends, hosting the F1 Live pre- and post-race shows, as well as the Weekend Debrief on Sky Sports F1.

David reflected on his memories of growing up on-track with his father, Sir Jack Brabham AO OBE, and his eventual path to becoming a motor sports driver. A highlight for the guests was hearing about the lengthy court battle securing the rights to the Brabham brand after David discovered that the family no longer owned it! Guests were delighted to learn that Jack Brabham was a long-time friend and industry colleague of the Stillwell family, cementing his Wesley connection.

Rosanna shared details of her own path to Formula One and the challenges of being a female in a predominantly male environment. With her unique perspective, Rosanna provided some very entertaining insights into the world of motorsport. Rosanna’s connection to Melbourne, and her role coaching at an APS school over one memorable year, endeared her to guests and her humorous take on ‘the paddock’ ensured another great event.

The Chair of the Wesley College Foundation, Nicki Lefkovits (OW1990), highlighted the role of philanthropy in the history of the College and the importance of bringing the Wesley College community together in support of current and future generations.
