Last term, the Wesley Elsternwick Chinese community adorned our campus with colourful decorations, some having been made by our Junior School students in Chinese classes. The occasion? The Mooncake Festival!
Also known as the Moon Festival or the Mid-Autumn Festival, it’s a harvest festival celebrated in Chinese culture. Held on the 15th day of the eighth month of the Chinese Lunar calendar, it commemorates and celebrates the end of the Autumn harvest. Students learnt all about the festival at special presentations during their assemblies.
The hits of the day were the bubble tea - made by Elsternwick Campus parents - and a mochi dessert, which were served up to students and staff. For those yet to experience this increasingly popular drink, bubble tea, which originates from Taiwan, is a very milky tea, often blended with fruit and fruit juices, with tapioca pearls (‘Boba’, hence bubbles) at the bottom of the drink.
If this doesn’t sound like you, then a mochi dessert might hit the spot! Essentially a rice cake, it’s a cute round bun made of soft and chewy rice. It's delicious.
