OW Cricket

Another cricket season has come and gone, and the Old Wesley Cricket Club is stronger than ever. Despite missing out on end of season successes, the 2022/23 season was full of triumphs, developments and a heap of fun.

Strong recruitment in the offseason saw OWCC introduce a 2nd XI team into the club for the very first time in our history. Our 2nd XI was competitive all season and provided depth to the 1st XI when required. The club also worked closely with the school to enable the relocation of our primary home ground to the front turf of the St Kilda Rd Campus.

The OWCC inaugural committee has also been created, with Branford Gruar (OW2012) selected as our fearless leader and President. This new committee signifies a gear shift for the OWCC towards long term club success, on and off the pitch.

With the club in great shape, there is no doubt that next season bodes well for the baggy purples. Having just missed out on finals, we are keen for a big pre-season and to get some new blood down to the club.

For those interested in joining, we train once a week (optional) followed by a pub meal. Our matches are 40 overs per side, on Sunday afternoons at some of Melbourne’s premium turf grounds.

We welcome all abilities and commitment levels. We aim for success but the most important thing for us is to create a fun, inclusive club culture where everyone can enjoy their cricket and each other’s company.

In January 2024, the OWCC will be touring India and Sri Lanka, playing cricket on some of the best test wickets in the subcontinent. The OWCC has strong ties with Mayo College in India; this tour follows a previous tour of India in 2020 and reciprocal tours in 2019 and 2022 where the OWCC hosted the Old Mayo team here in Australia. We can’t wait to strengthen those friendships and test our skills in the subcontinent next year. There are still spots open on this tour for anyone wishing to join!

If you are interested in joining the OWCC, contact our Head of Recruitment Rick Morris (OW2004) on 0438 081 886. Go Lions!

Ben Symon (OW2012)
Vice President OWCC
