Learning for life – skills that go beyond the classroom

Wesley College has introduced a new initiative as part of the Year 10 Health and Physical Education (HPE) curriculum, with students now able to attain a fully accredited CPR qualification during class time through external facilitator, Hero HQ.


While first aid has long been part of the Year 10 health curriculum, the inclusion of a formal CPR qualification adds a new layer of practical, life-saving skills to the program, with those who successfully complete all assessment tasks earning an official CPR qualification.

Medical emergencies can happen anywhere, and knowing how to perform CPR can mean the difference between life and death. From cardiac arrest to choking incidents, the ability to act swiftly and effectively can save lives, whether it be a classmate, a family member or even a stranger.

cprThe response from students has been overwhelmingly positive. Many found the course engaging, hands-on and rewarding, reporting a sense of accomplishment in applying their classroom learning to real-world scenarios.

'During the course, we heard about the direct link between survival rates and the number of people in the community who know CPR,’ said Annie (Year 10).

‘In most situations where CPR is necessary, the victim is generally a close friend or family member, so it feels good knowing I could step in and would know what to do until help arrives.’

By embedding CPR training into the Year 10 curriculum, Wesley College is not only enhancing student learning, but also fostering a culture of responsibility, preparedness, and community-mindedness. It is also a valuable certification for students considering careers in healthcare, childcare, lifeguarding, coaching, and other fields where emergency response skills are essential.

‘I recommend everyone does first aid and CPR training because it sets you up for success in the future,’ said Arlo (Year 10). ‘Having that qualification will also make you much more valuable in the work environment.’

We are excited to continue this initiative and equip our students with essential life-saving skills for the future.
