Congratulations to the Wesley Senior Boys’ and Girls’ Volleyball teams for their outstanding performance at the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup, held on the Gold Coast in December 2024.
This year marked the 40th anniversary of this event and set a new participation record, with 516 teams from 160 schools across Australia and New Zealand. Wesley was proudly represented by 19 students, four staff and two coaches.
Last year, our girls secured a gold medal in the U17 Division 2 competition, but this year, it was our boys turn to shine, claiming victory in Year 11, Division 3. Full credit to our girls who put up an incredible fight, finishing the Year 11 Division 2 competition in third place.
‘Tournaments like this can be both mentally and physically challenging,’ explained Girls’ Captain Abi (Year 12, St Kilda Road Campus). ‘As defending champions, we had high expectations going into the tournament, but after the first few matches, it was obvious the competition was much stronger than last year.’
‘The Queensland heat added to the challenge, and facing tough opponents highlighted the areas where we needed to grow and improve as a team. I am beyond proud of the girls for their efforts. Everyone played their absolute best and being able to go home with a medal was an amazing achievement.’
For Boys’ Vice-Captain Angus (Year 12, Glen Waverley Campus), winning was important, but the true goal was growth - both as individuals and as a team.
‘One of the biggest challenges the team faced was adapting to each other’s playing styles, as we had a mix of new and experienced players,’ he said. ‘Building chemistry was essential, and we worked hard at communicating both on and off the court to strengthen our bond not just as teammates, but as friends,’ he said.
‘I am so proud of my teammates for the growth they showed during the week. Seeing them set goals and push themselves made our win even more meaningful.’
Both teams were incredibly supportive of each other throughout the tournament, with senior players stepping up to help their younger teammates develop their skills and confidence throughout the tournament.
‘Having extra support during a tough game really makes a huge difference, and the way we rally around each other truly reflects the culture of the Firsts’ program at Wesley,’ said Abi.
‘Travelling as a team and competing at a national level provides fantastic learning and growth both on and off the court,’ said Boys’ Firsts Coach, Mick Stevens. ‘We are incredibly proud of our athletes for the effort and maturity they demonstrated throughout the tournament, and the way they represented themselves and the College.’
Both teams are determined to build on their success and have their sights firmly set on bringing home the APS Premiership this year. We wish them the very best of luck.
