Wesley College’s English Language Preparation Program (ELPP) has been showcased by the Department of Education as best practice for ‘Integrating English language and academic skills support,’ as recently published in the Best Practice International Student Engagement Guides.
This accolade validates the quality of Wesley’s in-house program which has been specifically designed to support local and international students’ linguistic, academic, cultural, and social orientation at Wesley College.
‘I am thrilled that the program has been recognised for best practice in academic skills support,’ said Susan Mu, Head of the English Language Preparation Program.
‘Each year, we witness the immense benefits of supporting new students not only in English language learning, but in understanding the norms and expectations of teaching and learning at Wesley, from participating in classroom discussions and responding to open ended questions to learning how to analyse and evaluate and express their own opinions.
ELPP students not only participate in English language classes, but have bespoke Maths, Science, Physical Education and Art classes, as well as the opportunity to participate in Wesley’s cocurricular Music, Sport and Performing Arts programs, so they are fully immersed in all aspects of campus life. The combination of student support and integration helps students experience a smooth transition to mainstream schooling and a successful educational journey at Wesley College.
‘Many Wesley students who began in the ELPP program have achieved remarkable success, with alumni securing places at prestigious universities across Australia and worldwide, including Cambridge University in the UK and Penn State in the US,’ said Susan.
‘As parents of two ELPP students, we cannot overstate the invaluable support provided by the program,’ said Shannon and Bo. 'Moving to a new country presented numerous challenges for our children, especially in adapting to the English language and academic expectations. Through personalised instruction, engaging activities and targeted language support, the program equipped them with the linguistic skills and confidence needed to excel in their studies.'
'The program also instilled in them a love for learning and the resilience to face future challenges. The nurturing environment fostered a sense of belonging and encouraged their active participation in classroom discussions and various project assignments. We are forever grateful for the program and all the teachers' unwavering support and the profound impact it had on our family.'
