Each day, the children have eagerly experimented, designed and created, using various materials to bring their imaginative ideas to life. Through this exploration, students have discovered that art is not just about creating pretty pictures, but a powerful way of expressing ideas, telling stories and seeing the world from new perspectives.
Along the way, they are strengthening and improving their fine motor skills, experimenting with symbolic expressions and engaging with creativity in ways that boost confidence and inspire a lifelong passion for learning.
‘I made an iguana out of clay. I made the head and then the body. I squeezed the clay and made the spikes too,’ said Long (ECLC 4).
Students used natural and recycled materials to create works reflective of their connections to the land, sky and sea. They drew inspiration from assemblage art, collage illustrators and sustainable practices to explore and bring their ideas to life.
'When I finished making it, I felt good because I worked so hard. It looks just like the real Werribee Zoo,' said Alexander (ECLC 4), who used recycled materials to create his piece.
Throughout the year, children observed the changing colours of the trees and foliage outside their classroom. They then used repurposed materials to make their own winter inspired collage, a project that saw them creatively practice their fine motor skills through tearing, sorting and pasting, to make a collaborative work of art.
‘This is the summer tree, spring tree and winter tree. The winter tree has no leaves because they all fell off. Springtime it’s warm so the leaves come back and in summertime, it’s hot and the trees can grow so very high,’ said Hang (ECLC 3).
Storytelling is also embraced in the ECLC through creative mediums like art and digital media, encouraging students to be imaginative while learning about themselves, each other and the world around them.
The children’s art brightens the classroom walls and infuses the ECLC with joy and wonder; each brushstroke and glued piece of paper marking a step in their exciting journeys of self-expression and discovery. Guided by their own curiosity, Wesley's youngest learners are given the tools and encouragement they need to blossom into confident, creative thinkers.
