It’s always a welcome sight to see students return to campus, and our boarders are among the first familiar faces to return to the College in January. There will be plenty for our boarders to look forward to at Learning in Residence this year.
One of the first exciting changes students will notice is the single rooms with ensuite for Year 12 students. These will enable our Senior students to study according to their own schedule, without disturbing a roommate.
The residential curriculum will also look a bit different, with an increased emphasis on wellbeing and general ‘life skills’ like changing a tyre.
We saw an opportunity to make the residential curriculum a real standout in school boarding and provide benefit to our students, We’ve run a solid residential curriculum for some years now, but we’re always improving it to adapt to the needs of our current students.
The residential curriculum program covers eight key areas: future skills, academic enrichment and support, leadership development, an activities program, culture and community, community service, wellbeing The program also celebrates the Year 12 students as they graduate and encourages reflection and gratitude through the whole Learning in Residence community.
Formal sessions include everything from working one-to-one with teachers for academic support and study skill seminars to presentations by specialists such as elite sport dieticians, educational neuroscientists and sleep physicians. Future-focused sessions even hone practical life skills like CV-writing, essential car maintenance, hospitality courses and accredited barista courses.
With boarders from Years 9 to 12, the residential program is adapted to suit the needs of each learner and age group, and there are also gender-specific mental health programs.
Boarding runs deep in the culture at Wesley, and informs the contemporary approach to the development of the whole person in an inclusive, coeducational environment.
‘Our students live and learn onsite at our Glen Waverley Campus, so the after-school programs are key to keeping students engaged.’ our Head of Learning in Residence says.
‘Our boarding families have entrusted us with the care and development of their teenage children, who may be far from home.
‘The residential programs we run outside school hours aren’t just to keep our students entertained, though; they’re designed around developing key skills to help ensure our boarders experience success now and in the future.’
