Rising talent - Kobi George joins the AFL Flying Boomerangs

Kobi George

Congratulations to Year 9 Wesley student Kobi George, for his selection into the elite Indigenous AFL football pathway program, the AFL National Flying Boomerangs.

This is an outstanding achievement. Kobi is one of just 25 players from across Australia to be accepted into the program, having shown immense football talent, leadership potential and personal character during his participation in the recent AFL National Diversity Championships, held in Blacktown, Sydney last month.

As Kobi recalls, ‘When they announced my name I felt so surprised and thrilled. I couldn’t wait to tell my parents. This opportunity means everything to me. Now that the news has sunk in, I feel so honoured to have been selected in this exclusive program.’

As part of the Flying Boomerangs, Kobi will have an opportunity to further develop his football skills, with training to support his personal development towards his AFL goals.

This elite group of talented players will travel overseas later this year to represent Australia and the Indigenous community.

Since its inception in 2006, the Flying Boomerangs Program has become highly sought after among young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander football players.

The program is based on 4 key pillars of learning:

  • cultural identity
  • decision making
  • resilience
  • communication

Kobi has been recognised as a ‘Rising Star’ by local community newspaper, The Leader since joining the Boomerangs.

As Kobi confides, ‘This opportunity is about taking a step closer to achieving my goal of playing AFL, and becoming a role model for my people. I would love to make a career out of playing the game I love, but for now it is about making the most of every opportunity that comes my way.’

We look forward to following Kobi on his exciting journey with the AFL National Flying Boomerangs.
