International science school

11 student Alex Williams has been awarded a scholarship to attend the Professor Harry Messel International Science School at the University of Sydney. He will join 140 other high achieving young scientists from all over Australia and across the world. The very busy two-week program includes the opportunity to meet and learn from inspiring scientists who are innovators in their research fields, experience university life and hands-on experiments, and getting to know other top science students from all over the world.

The theme for 2015 is BIG: Big Ideas, Big Challenges, Big Science and Alex can’t wait to get started. He is really excited to meet other students who share his passion for science, and hopes that it will inspire him to make the most of his International Baccalaureate Diploma studies.

Alex enjoys studying science because, “It faces the big questions whilst providing logical answers that, if you endeavour to understand them, will always work. I really do think it’s the most important thing someone can study.”

Physics is his favourite field of research as “It is really interesting to be able to dissect the basic laws of the universe and directly see how

they affect the real world. Although some people think it’s the most abstract science, I find it to be the most applied. Almost everything we do has some sort of direct application to everyday life. Also, the most technical parts involve a lot of maths which I enjoy a lot as well.”

Wesley is thrilled that Alex is able to take advantage of this academic opportunity, and we look forward to seeing big things from him as he pursues his interest in science and physics.
