Wounded at Gallipoli (first day at Lone Pine). He received three Mentions In Dispatches and a Distinguished Service Order was awarded in 1916. He was the Commanding Officer of 6th Battalion from 1916. A fatal shell wound at La Motte while on reconnaissance pending defence of area from German advance.
