Private Basil John Hooper
Private BJ Hooper (OW1908) was a member of the 3rd Field Coy. of Engineers, and was killed in action at the landing on 25 April; the first OW to die at Gallipoli.
He was sitting with his rifle between his knees as the boat approached the shore, when a bullet passed through his temples, death being instantaneous. On leaving Wesley, for some time he was employed in a city music warehouse, and for three years later was working with his brother on a farm at Mooroopna.
